American
families are far more diverse and complex today than they were 50 years
ago. As ideas about marriage, divorce, and remarriage have changed, so
too have our understandings about cohabitation, childbearing, parenting,
and the transition to adulthood. Americans of all socioeconomic
backgrounds have witnessed changes in the nature of family life, but as
this book reveals, these changes play out in very different ways for the
wealthy or well off than they do for the poor.

THE
MIDDLE CLASS IN AMERICA |
|
Amazon's
Book
Description.
2012.
|
Most Americans consider
themselves middle class. This raises the question, what does it mean
to be middle class? Income levels alone do not define the middle
class. Many very high and very low income persons report themselves as
middle class. Social scientists have explained this by defining
"middle class" as a combination of values, expectations and
aspirations, as well as income levels. Middle class families and those
aspiring to be part of the middle class want economic stability, a
home and a secure retirement. This book examines various definitions,
discusses middle class values and aspirations, and presents
hypothetical budgets showing how these aspirations might be achieved
with different incomes. Consideration is discussed as to whether or
not it is harder to live a middle class lifestyle today that it was
twenty years ago.

LINCOLN |

Historical
Narrative.
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
9-27-11.
|
The
anchor of The O'Reilly Factor recounts one of the most dramatic stories
in American history—how one gunshot changed the country forever. In
the spring of 1865, the bloody saga of America's Civil War finally comes
to an end after a series of increasingly harrowing battles. President
Abraham Lincoln's generous terms for Robert E. Lee's surrender are
devised to fulfill Lincoln's dream of healing a divided nation, with the
former Confederates allowed to reintegrate into American society. But
one man and his band of murderous accomplices, perhaps reaching into the
highest ranks of the U.S. government, are not appeased.

In
the Pulitzer prize-winning classic The Killer Angels, Michael
Shaara created the finest Civil War novel of our time, an enduring
bestseller that has sold more than two million copies.
For Robert E.
Lee, Gettysburg was an unspeakable disaster--compounded by the
shattering loss of the fiery Stonewall Jackson two months before. Lee
knows better than anyone that the South cannot survive a war of
attrition. But with the total devotion of his generals--Longstreet,
Hill, Stuart--and his unswerving faith in God, Lee is determined to
fight to the bitter end.
Here too is Joshua Chamberlain, the college professor who emerged as the
Union hero of Gettysburg--and who will rise to become one of the
greatest figures of the Civil War.

THEY
OWN IT ALL (INCLUDING YOU)! |
|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
6-8-2009.
|
This book proves, in
simple easy language, that we are living in a "Matrix".
Behind a fraudulent and corrupt "monetary" system lies a
hidden creditor. This book proves that this creditor is actually the
puppeteer of an insolvent government and hidden master of all American
citizens and courts. The creditor has deviously devised a monetary
system based on exchange of debt owned and or liened by the creditor.
As one may not see one specific tree in the forest, one does not see a
hidden mark (lien) on every transaction he makes, until that specific
mark is actually pointed out. Then it becomes visible for all time.
“They Own It All” proves that we all have become subject to a
devious scheme for our daily transactions. The book reveals the common
denominator for the economic implosion, loss of unalienable rights,
rise of government tyranny, and how the servant (government) became
the master, though itself serving a well hidden higher master. By
making the invisible (toxic and liened currency) visible the Reader is
empowered to remedy a collapsing society with solid steps to create a
new order for the People, not the government and its hidden
puppeteers.

Too
much TV? (Excerpts)
In a study of 1,300
children from Michigan and Montreal, [author Linda] Pagani and her
colleagues recently documented that watching TV at age two shows a
troubling connection with an array of behaviors and outcomes when
the child is reassessed at age 10. The more television the toddler
watched, the greater the likelihood, several years later, that he
or she would perform worse in math, consume more soda and junk
food, have a higher-than-average body mass, engage poorly in
class, and be bullied at school.
If you are already thinking, “Yes, but my toddlers only watch
educational television,” Pagani has bad news. According to
her research, it's the passive nature of watching television that
is harmful, not the content of the programming.
"Sitting in front of the television is a sedentary
intellectual and physical activity," Pagani says.
"We’re talking about a time of life when your brain is
tripling in size and your neural networks are coming together and
your fundamental brain circuitry is being wired. It's critical
that young children spend this time of development engaging in
physical activities and interacting with others."

STEAL
THIS VOTE |
|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
6-22-05.
|
The 2000 presidential
election meltdown and the more recent controversy about computer
voting machines did not come out of the blue. Steal This Vote
tells the fraught but very colorful history of electoral malfeasance
in the United States. It is a tale of votes bought, stolen,
suppressed, lost, cast more than once, assigned to dead people and
pets, miscounted, thrown into rivers, and litigated all the way to the
Supreme Court. (No wonder America has the lowest voter participation
rate of any Western democracy!) Andrew Gumbel—whose work on the new
electronic voting fraud has been praised by Gore Vidal and Paul
Krugman, and has won a Project Censored Award—shows that, for all
the idealism about American democracy, free and fair elections have
been the exception, not the rule. In fact, Gumbel suggests that
Tammany Hall, shrouded as it is in moral odium, might have been a
fairer system than we have today, because ostensibly positive
developments like the secret ballot have been used to squash voting
rights ever since.

NONE
DARE CALL IT CONSPIRACY |
|
Review by
Robert P.
Beveridge.
1976.
|
[Authors]
Allen and Abraham here attempt to make the case that the events of
recent world history, from the Bolshevik Revolution forward, have been
brought into being and controlled by a relatively small group of
insiders, mostly international banking magnates and (later on) the
Council on Foreign Relations. While it's certainly conspiracy theory,
Allen and Abraham have done a fine job of backing up their assertions
with a huge amount of primary and secondary source material (just
looking up the titles in the bibliography took me the better part of two
hours). Whether you're a fan of conspiracy theory or not, the facts
presented, and the conclusions drawn, in this book, are
thought-provoking and outrageous.

THE
BEST ENEMY MONEY CAN BUY |
|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
6-1986.
|
The business of lending
blood money is one of the most thoroughly sordid, cold blooded, and
criminal acts that were ever carried on, to any considerable extent,
amongst human beings. It is like lending money to slave traders, or to
common robbers and pirates, to be repaid out of their plunder. And the
man who loans money to governments, so called, for the purpose of
enabling the latter to rob, enslave and murder their own people, are
among the greatest villains that the world has ever seen.
With mountains of documentation, mostly from government and corporate
sources, Sutton shows that Soviet military technology is heavily
dependent on U.S. and allied gifts, "peaceful trade" and
exchange programs. We've built for, sold, traded, or given outright to
the Communists everything from copper wiring and military trucks to
tank technology, missile guidance technology, and computers - even the
Space Shuttle.

secrecy, this intriguing expose takes a behind-the-scenes look at
Yale's mysterious society, the Order of the Skull and Bones, and its
prominent members, numbering among them Tafts, Rockefellers,

become senators, judges, cabinet secretaries, spies, titans of finance
and industry, and even US presidents, including George W Bush. This
book reveals that far from being a campus fraternity, the society is
more concerned with the success of its members in the post-collegiate
world. Included are a verified membership list, rare reprints of
original Order materials revealing the interlocking power centers
dominated by Bonesmen, and a peek inside the Tomb, their 140-year-old

AMERICAN
CONSPIRACIES: LIES, LIES, AND MORE
DIRTY LIES THAT THE GOVERNMENT TELLS US |
|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
4-4-2011.
|
Seven weeks on the
New York Times bestseller list: Jesse Ventura tells it like it is, and
this time he tackles our government’s biggest secrets.
In this explosive
account of wrongful acts and ensuing cover-ups, Jesse Ventura takes a
systematic look at the wide gap between what the government knows and
when the government knows it, and what is revealed to the American
people and when it is revealed. The media is complicit in these acts
of deception, often refusing to consider alternate possibilities and
dismissing voices that diverge from public opinion. In American
Conspiracies, Ventura looks closely at the theories that have been
presented over the years and examines the truth, as well as the lies.
The assassinations of Abraham Lincoln, the Kennedys, and Martin Luther
King Jr.—these cases and more need to be re-examined in Ventura’s
eyes.
Was Watergate presented honestly, or was the CIA involved? Did the
Republican Party set out to purposefully steal two elections? Has all
of the evidence on 9/11 been presented, or is there another angle that
the media is afraid to explore?
And finally, is the collapse of today’s financial order and the
bailout plan by the Federal Reserve the widest-reaching conspiracy
ever perpetrated? Nothing gets by Jesse Ventura in American
Conspiracies.

Description.

Mathias Broeckers
was working on a book on conspiracies and conspiracy theories when
9/11 hit. Suddenly his study of dusty historical specimens was
deluged by an outpouring of ideal research material, live on the
screen. Aspiring to found the new science of conspirology,
Broeckers doesn't fear the 'conspiracy theory' label. Instead he
plunges into a fascinating exploration of the subject of
conspiracy itself, before tackling the problems of evidence for
two competing narratives: the 'Bin Laden conspiracy' theory, and
dissident suspicions of a staged 'inside job' by conspirators
within the government. From the Top Ten best-seller list in
Germany, his original viewpoint will be warmly welcomed in his
first English language edition.

PLANET

|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
3-2-2006.
|
According
to the United Nations, more than one billion people now live in the
slums of the cities of the South. In this brilliant and ambitious book,
Mike Davis explores the future of a radically unequal and explosively
unstable urban world. From the sprawling barricadas of Lima to the
garbage hills of Manila, urbanization has been disconnected from
industrialization, and even from economic growth. Davis portrays a vast
humanity warehoused in shantytowns and exiled from the formal world
economy. He argues that the rise of this informal urban proletariat is a
wholly unforeseen development, and asks whether the great slums, as a
terrified Victorian middle class once imagined, are volcanoes waiting to
erupt. |

TAKE THE MONEY AND
RUN |
|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
3-20-2009.
|
In this book, an
expert in the field explains why the United States is the world's
largest debtor nation and how America's relationship to creditor
states is of growing economic, diplomatic, and even national
security concern. Foreign countries are not merely investing in
U.S. corporations but are purchasing them outright: Abu Dhabi
bought Citigroup securities, Kuwait purchased a large block
Merrill Lynch stock, and China bought Morgan Stanley's convertible
securities-and this happened before the September 2008 meltdown of
Wall Street. The means by which wealthy foreign states make these
purchases are sovereign wealth funds, their surplus capital that
they are seeking to invest in order to generate the greatest
return. Currently, the largest sovereign wealth funds are held by
the United Arab Emirates (of which Abu Dhabi is part), Norway,
Singapore, Kuwait, and the People's Republic of China; Qatar and
Libya are also in the top ten. The United States has no such fund
(although the state of Alaska does). This book takes a close look
at China's and Norway's sovereign wealth funds to explain how they
work. The author also uses domestic examples (Harvard's endowment,
the California's state employees' retirement fund) to propose how
the United States could create a sovereign wealth fund,
speculating that such a fund could solve the looming Social
Security funds shortfall. Most important, the book elucidates the
national security aspects of not having an American sovereign
wealth fund when so many other nations-both friend and foe-have
them.

SOVEREIGN
WEALTH AND SOVEREIGN POWER |
|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
9-2008.
|
The rise in
China's trade surplus, the increase in oil prices, and a slowdown
in demand for U.S. assets from private investors abroad has
increased the United States' reliance on foreign governments for
financing. U.S. banks and broker-dealers now draw on the Persian
Gulf, Singapore, China, and to a lesser degree Korea to shore up
their depleted capital base. The scale of these flows is stunning.
In 2007 purchases of financial assets by China's government almost
exceeded U.S. consumers' purchases of Chinese-made goods, and the
increase in the Gulf's dollar holdings almost certainly topped
direct U.S. spending on Gulf oil. This report examines whether
America's ability to secure large quantities of external financing
from foreign governments is a reflection of its political power, a
constraint on its ability to exercise power, or a combination of
the two. It posits that the constraints associated with U.S.
dependence on other governments for financing are rising and that
the U.S. current account deficit is now a strategic vulnerability,
not a sign of financial strength. The report concludes with
recommendations to address the current account deficit and to
strengthen the United States' position abroad.

HOW
THE WORLD REALLY WORKS |
|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
1-1997.
|
More and more Americans
are coming to feel that something has gone fundamentally wrong in our
society. We have suffered repetitive wars, big and small, some won and
some lost, but with the peace always lost. Our society has been
drained of around $5 trillion in welfare costs since LBJ's War on
Poverty was declared, but with no diminution in the incidence of
"poverty". Our "War on Drugs" has also been lost,
with its societal costs running around $500 billion per year. The cost
of fixes for runaway environmentalism has reached about $1 trillion
since the birth of the EPA in 1970. Our national debt is over $5
trillion and still going up. Two breadwinners per family has become
normal, just to keep bread on the table. Americans feel put upon, and
they are right, but they don't know who's doing it to them or why.
Such issues have been pondered by researchers for many years, but the
historical facts are finally bringing the pieces of the puzzle
together. This book paints a picture of that largely completed puzzle,
and lays out who the culprits are, why they are doing what they are
doing, and how they are managing to pull off what is probably the
biggest mass robbery of wealth and individual freedom in human
history. Your reading this book will help to expose and stop the
destruction, and help to guarantee a future of freedom rather than
slavery for your children.

REPUBLIC LOST: HOW MONEY CORRUPTS
CONGRESS - AND A PLAN TO STOP IT |
|
From
Amazon's
Book
Description.
10-5-2011
|
In an era when
special interests funnel huge amounts of money into our
government-driven by shifts in campaign-finance rules and brought to
new levels by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal
Election Commission-trust in our government has reached an
all-time low. More than ever before, Americans believe that money
buys results in Congress, and that business interests wield control
over our legislature.
With heartfelt urgency and a keen desire for righting wrongs,
Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig takes a clear-eyed look at how
we arrived at this crisis: how fundamentally good people, with good
intentions, have allowed our democracy to be co-opted by outside
interests, and how this exploitation has become entrenched in the
system. Rejecting simple labels and reductive logic-and instead
using examples that resonate as powerfully on the Right as on the
Left-Lessig seeks out the root causes of our situation. He plumbs
the issues of campaign financing and corporate lobbying, revealing
the human faces and follies that have allowed corruption to take
such a foothold in our system. He puts the issues in terms that
nonwonks can understand, using real-world analogies and real human
stories. And ultimately he calls for widespread mobilization and a
new Constitutional Convention, presenting achievable solutions for
regaining control of our corrupted-but redeemable-representational
system. In this way, Lessig plots a roadmap for returning our
republic to its intended greatness.
While America may be divided, Lessig vividly champions the idea that
we can succeed if we accept that corruption is our common enemy and
that we must find a way to fight against it. In REPUBLIC, LOST, he
not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the
practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

chapter-by-chapter analysis documenting the power of Israel via the
pro-Zionist lobby on US Middle East policy. It explores the
extraordinary extent of US political, economic, military and
diplomatic support for Israel along with the means whereby such
support is generated and consolidated. Contending that Zionist power
in the US ensured unconditional backing for Israeli colonization of
Palestine and its massive uprooting of Palestinians, it views the
interests of Israel rather than those of Big Oil as the primary cause
of the disastrous US wars against Iraq and threats of war against Iran
and Syria.

This book provides a
comprehensive guide to the systemic dimensions of the US empire.
Petras elaborates the changes within the US ruling class, as its
manufacturing sector declines and gives way to the ascendancy of
finance capital, illustrated by its dominance of both the US economy,
and the parameters for political debate on the US role in the world
economy (globalization, trade liberalization).
He elaborates the contradictions in current immigration/trade
liberalization policies, and how these work toward forcing the
displacement of peoples, and furthering the underdevelopment of third
world countries. He outlines how the world capitalist system is laced
together in an intricate hierarchy where the US pulls most of the
strings, even outside its ostensible area of dominance. The role of
corruption in securing world markets is addressed, as are the reasons
for the spectacular global growth in new billionaires.
The role of the Zionist Lobby in America is examined as it relates to
the catastrophic wars in Iraq and Lebanon, and the threat of a further
attack on Iran.
Petras sheds light on the actual status of contemporary resistance to
US hegemony within China, Latin America, and the Middle East.

From a State Department
insider, the first account of our blundering efforts to rebuild
Iraq--a shocking and rollicking true-life tale of Americans abroad
Charged with rebuilding Iraq, would you spend taxpayer money on a
sports mural in Baghdad's most dangerous neighborhood to promote
reconciliation through art?
How about an isolated milk factory that
cannot get its milk to market? Or a pastry class training women to
open cafés on bombed-out streets without water or electricity?
According to Peter Van Buren, we bought all these projects and more in
the most expensive hearts-and-minds campaign since the Marshall Plan.
We Meant Well is his eyewitness account of the civilian side of the
surge--that surreal and bollixed attempt to defeat terrorism and win
over Iraqis by reconstructing the world we had just destroyed.
Leading
a State Department Provincial Reconstruction Team on its quixotic
mission, Van Buren details, with laser-like irony, his yearlong
encounter with pointless projects, bureaucratic fumbling, overwhelmed
soldiers, and oblivious administrators secluded in the world's largest
embassy, who fail to realize that you can't rebuild a country without
first picking up the trash.
Darkly funny while deadly serious, We Meant Well is a tragicomic
voyage of ineptitude and corruption that leaves its writer--and
readers--appalled and disillusioned but wiser.
